12/11/06 - A Nation within a Nation, or a Nation without a Nation?
The NLDL and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador request that the Parliament of Canada recognize our province as a “Nation within a united
Canada”. An equivalent motion regarding Quebec was adopted on November 27, 2006 by a vote of 266-16. We believe that having once been an
independent nation in our own right, the people of Newfoundland and Labrador deserve to be given this designation and acceptance by the
Canadian government and the people of Canada.
Our music, literature, art, history, and way of life are unique. To say that Newfoundlanders and
Labradorians are not unique and worthy of being accepted as a nation is to say that a society
developed over hundreds of years has become unrecognizable after only 57 years of
confederation… and that would be a sad statement for the people of Canada to make.
