UPDATE - 26/04/07
NLDL Nation within a Nation Campaign
The NLDL is happy to have the opportunity to recognize the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for its strong public
support of the principles and concepts behind our "Nation within a Nation" campaign.
The membership of NLDL has felt for some time that recognition of our distinct culture is something that has been
neglected by Canada. In an attempt address this terrible reality, in November of 2006 the NLDL launched it's "Nation
within a Nation" campaign. The intent of this effort is to have the Parliament of Canada recognize our people and our
culture through a motion in the House of Commons, in the same way as the Quebecois were recognized with Parliament's
overwhelming support.
Since that time we have contacted all 308 Canadian MPs, every member of the Senate and the Governor General, some on
multiple occasions. We have presented a summary of our case to them all and requested their full support for our
initiative.
Several MPs (all elected in other provinces) have responded positively to our effort and have sent copies of our
correspondence to the Minister of Canadian Heritage and other key cabinet representatives.
Yesterday, thanks to the tone set by both the Throne speech and through the Premier's direct comment, that we deserved
the same national recognition as Quebec, our efforts have gained new momentum. It should now be clear to Ottawa that our
provincial government is fully onside with our efforts.
While not a single locally elected federal representatives has yet acknowledged our correspondence or effort, we will
never the less continue to push forward with a renewed energy and strength that comes from the provincial government's
supportive words.
The membership of NLDL and the residents of this province have long known that Newfoundland and Labrador is distinct in
its cultural identities, history, cuisine, music, dialects and way of life. The time for this fact to be recognized in
Canada is long overdue and the membership of NLDL will not rest until it is.
